The IRS is developing more and more digital tools. However, many taxpayers, and their tax pros, are not aware of the online options when working with the IRS. In this course, discover the many ways taxpayers and tax pros can work with the IRS online using the many tools offered by the IRS. Tax pros will be able to save time by adopting new IRS online features and effectively using IRS transcripts to answer client questions and solve  common issues.

The IRS’s Integrated Data Retrieval System is a massive computer system that logs billions of data entries for hundreds of millions of business and personal taxpayers every year. That massive system is broken down into several separate accounts which store vital taxpayer information on a year-by-year basis. One of the most important first steps to successfully representing taxpayers before the IRS, or even to preparing current tax returns, is to get the client’s internal transcripts.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn common reasons taxpayers and tax pros have to work with the IRS outside of filing a tax return
  • Discover uses for IRS transcripts
  • Activate filing and recording Forms 2848 and 8821 online with the IRS
  • Use IRS digital tools effectively in helping your clients
  • Explain how to get access to IRS digital tools
  • Identify the future features of IRS digital tools

Key topics covered in this course:

  • How to access IRS transcripts for an accurate tax return?
  • What is an IRS tax transcript, and how do you request one?
  • Types of tax transcripts
  • Working with the IRS: common reasons and options
  • Overview of IRS Transcripts and common uses
  • Filing authorizations (Forms 2848 and 8821) with the IRS
  • Taxpayer and tax pro digital tools
  • Secure Access Digital Identity
  • Best practices and tips

We identify the various Transaction Codes used in the IRS’s Individual and Business Master File systems, and how to read and interpret those codes. And we address the IRS’s very obscure “mirrored transcript” which is created in innocent spouse and bankruptcy cases. Finally, we address the use of transcripts in calculating critical tax bankruptcy discharge eligibility dates.

The information you’ll learn in this Session will unlock the door to vital and indispensable information that the IRS keeps on your clients, which you absolutely must have access to if you’re going to be effective in your job.
